Mattel Pixar Cars: NEW Mini Adventures CARS 2008

I tried to resist but I broke down after 3 seconds after holding one of the CARS Mini Adventures 2-pack. I am way too easy.

So, if you decide against collecting these, my advice is do not look closely at them and do not pick them up … you will be a goner like me … they are just so gosh darn cute …

Each 2-pack has its own “theme.” Note, they are all plastic and not diecast and they might be a sqoosh on the small size for kids 3 and under so you will have to display and play with them until they turn 4 … or 34 before they can pry them from your hands 🙂

Keep in mind as this is a new series and unlike the 1:55 series history and fan base to now, we cannot be certain all of these listed below will be released or released as configured – it will all depends on how sales goes in the first 2-3 months – that will be the main determination if this line will feature all the CARS listed here and of course, if it continues. If sales are weak, we might only see the main characters repeated and not expand out into the expansion of characters in Box F (for example) or of course, if sales are as slow as the pullbacks, they might just be canceled outright after the first few boxes …

After the initial buzz, I have to say that if Mattel wants to continue with this line, they will need to start dropping the prices. I have been to several stores fully stocked with the playsets which are not selling at all – the MINI CARS themselves are selling okay but nowhere near the sell-thru rate of the 1:55 CARS. The main strike against this line is that it’s not canon to the movie and of less interest to a lot of people … it also doesn’t help that people realize 2008 is a year of over 100 1:55 CARS announced … and presumably even more coming out! So if Mattel wants this line to thrive, they are going to need to drop prices and skip the hokey playsets (the submarine playset?) (the King/McQueen launcher is okay) … they are probably going to need to make the 2-packs around $3.99 – I think at that price point, people might pick up some because they’re cute and if they can’t find the 1:55 CAR they want, they might feel the need to buy something …

But in any case, here are the SEALED BOX announced:

Happy Holidays One & All!

Thanks for a great year – glad to share in our obsession together!

Now that the glad tidings & holiday spirit are over, I’ll be the guy wedging my way into the back room and yelling, “I know you have the launchers and 3-packs hidden back here?! Where they be?! I’ve got cash … well, okay, this credit from returning the 40 Crusin’ McQueen’s … so where be the new CARS – Me wantee! Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! … Are these 50% off? Because I put a sticker on it that says 50% off so I should get it?!”

Can’t wait for Wednesday! 🙂

But for the next two days, I promise to be polite, offer good cheer and goodwill towards all … but on Wednesday morning, I’ll be full of er, holiday ham and rum cookies … so you better watch out, you better not cry …

When McQueen is blue, the town tries to cheer him up with a display stand and lights.

Mattel Disney Pixar Cars: How to Buy Factory Sealed Cases Boxes

If you’re an old school reader here, we welcome our first advertiser. We tried to hold out but Children’s Toy Closet was just too perfect – they sell CARS and they sell them at some of the best prices so it’s the perfect solution. For our next advertiser, we’re looking for the BMW dealership with brand new cars at 85% off 🙂

While we have had had a section on buying factory sealed cases within the WHERE TO BUY post, we still get questions about buying sealed cases (what, people don’t read every word I write? 😉 ).

While this is a photo of an old box from last year, the current boxes of individual CARS ship in a box that looks essentially the same and holds 18 CARS. So, if you are at a retail store and you see one of these boxes and they have the words CARS CHARACTER ASSORTMENT, you are looking at a factory box. The clincher is “CONTAINS 18 TOYS.” (and yes, diecast cars are not technically ‘action figures’ but close enough).

Right now, the giant internal code reads something like: M1054-999D – the last letter indicating which Box Assortment. D is the current shipping box (December 2007) and the last of 2007 for individual CARS.

The Movie Moments codes are slightly different: M4255-999B being the current shipping box code.

All the shipments for 2008 that we have detailed info for are contained in this post.

So, one way to avoid the driving around and arriving at empty pegs – which then causes you to close your eyes and place your fingertips on the empty pegs – trying to draw psychic energy from the slight vibrations – was Dale Jr. there? … and for how long … one way to avoid the stares and kids running away from you is to buy them by the case.

Sure, it’s not as much fun as all other cars on the road skid off from the sleet but you were smart to put on the studded tires – you arrive as they are unpacking a container of CARS and you are the only one in the store … it could happen … or is the more likely scenario where you wonder how is it possible NOT to stock 3 pegs for 2 freakin’ MONTHS! They don’t run out of Oreros, do they? Why would they not stock CARS that sell like Oreos?

Or instead of deciding you need a 220v hair drying voltage converter as an excuse to drive 15-miles out of your way, why not just sit at home and answer the door – and have them drop off 18 CARS – untouched by human hands after they left the factory?

Now, it’s not all peaches and cream as Mattel insists on including older CARS in every shipment so you do have to read our other post on what’s coming to make sure it’s the CARS you do want but it is nice … and as long as you have others collecting, it’s not the world’s worst problem to have an extra RPM or two … and for international collectors, it’s a nice way to go instead of trying to guess if this month, Mattel might run the imaginary blockade to Europe and drop off more CARS …

So, some online retailers to look first for SEALED BOXES include:

Of course, our first sponsor, Children’s Toy Closet which is easy to recommend. Not only do you get great personalized service, you get some of the best prices for sealed boxes. They use UPS tracking & email so you get a blow by blow account of when the box is on its way and what day to expect it. They also have some of the lowest prices on the Movie Moments cases & the cases of the new 3-pack series. They do ship international and they take credit cards via Paypal (they also accept checks & money orders).

One the mainstay retailers to consider for sealed box ordering is 1StopDiecast, very reputable and excellent double packing. Their pricing includes shipping to anywhere in the US and it’s double boxed. Their website is the most customer friendly listing what Mattel has announced for each shipment for 2008 and its box code. Simply click on each one you want to order. The only sight confusion is the first listing is a I-want-order-every shipment-box-order so unless you want that, scroll down a little. They answer emails and phones promptly. They also sell Movie Moments by the case. They do NOT sell individual CARS. They do ship international.

BigBadToyStore is another reputable dealer with great customer service that I have personally ordered from. They carry lots of other toys and they answer emails promptly – highly recommended. They are the first place I’ve seen that is offering the new LAUNCHERS sealed box – 6 in the box though it is unclear how each case is packed:

Collectible Diecast I know they have been around a while though I have personally never ordered from them. If you collect other diecasts, they might be your way to go as you can combine your order.

Of course, there’s also eBay – not usually the cheapest way to go but always a consideration.

And yes, people always ask if they can just open up an account with Mattel – yes – as long as you have a real business storefront and you’re willing to spend a minimal amount each quarter (I’m pretty sure it’s in the thousands but I do not recall the exact amount) but in either case, not something you lightly get into …

So, good luck – whatever you decide.

If you want a recap of the Mattel Pixar CARS line from the beginning.

Mattel Pixar Cars Checklist: It’s What to Collect

Unlike other toys/hot items that stay hot for a few weeks or months – this Mattel Pixar CARS diecast line has pretty been SIZZLING for 16 months – not just rare but almost un-heard of.

The post below outlines why the line is so difficult and some solutions. There is a list of the main retailers, some online options and for international customers,s ome options.

Mattel Pixar Cars: I Want to Buy But Where?

First, one way to skip the driving around is to buy sealed cases, here is a brief rundown on what that is AND what are the CARS coming this holiday season (the last two months of 2007):

And what’s coming in 2008 by the sealed case:

Or what’s the latest on the shelf cards & CARS look like?

Mattel Pixar: What’s in Stores Now

If you wish to plot out what CAR will make its first appearance & in what box in 2008, a friend of 2aDay has thoughtfully provided a spreadsheet you can download or it’s also been added to our online checklist/spreadsheet.

For those on the intermediate & advanced stages of this obsession (yes, I has the fever! I has the fever 🙂 ) … you’ll want a “field guide” to spotting what’s what:

A Basic Checklist (in spreadsheet form)

The checklist offers a few versions on how you like your poison 😉

Then of course, a more indepth guideline on how to collect them – just one of each? one of each available on a different card?

As you progress further, you might need or want a guide to understanding what do the three different designs on the front indicate and how complete of a collector you want to be:

Of course, by now, you’ll want to know everything and plan your budget carefully … Mattel will definitely release 35/36 of the Piston Cup Racers in one massive collector’s set but will they release them in smaller sets? Our speculation on why rioting is probably not necessary:

If you prefer to see some of the cardbacks in a larger file size or to view the two posters for a visual look at the CARS to collect, our FLICKER page is here.

Did you know the Blu-Ray DVD (for HDTV’s) will include a “name-spotter” feature that will let you see the names of 217 CARS within the movie?

Peter Jackson to Helm The Hobbit

peter jackson new Peter Jackson apparently is burying the hatchet and will be involved in creating the long-awaited Hobbit film!

The adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s 1937 novel (talk about longevity in a property) is set to be split into two films which are scheduled for release in 2010 and 2011. Of course, denials abound from both Jackson and New Line Studios but the web is rife with this story today.

Derailed by rights issues for some time over monies Jackson felt owed to him from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy of films (and not a small sum either), it appears the films are a go.

Jackson will not be directing however but producing the new films with a director yet to be announced. Too soon for any casting details but one wonders if they’ll sneak Ian Holm back into the project. He’ll be too old to play a young Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit for sure.

Mattel Disney Pixar Cars: The Art of CARS

If you missed it, Chronicle Books which is practically next door to Pixar in Emeryville publishes an “Art of …” book to go with each new Pixar release and way back in April of 2006, they published ART OF CARS.

© Copyright Disney/Pixar

As usual, it’s a classy and oversized book of sketches, drawings and well, the art behind the art … so if you need one more item for that CARS fan …

© Copyright Disney/Pixar

These are course, reduced down from the oversized 11″ by 17″ book but you get an idea of the dedication and fun that goes into each Pixar movie.

And for CARS fans – if you are ready to park the real car outside the garage, here is the town on Radiator Springs in its entirety … ready for you to re-create …

And the upper left corner is the court house …

The original price was/is $40. It was selling as a Bargain Book – Amazon only has it in its “used” section but there are some new copies available.

Great news – you can see these all “live” at the Petersen Auto Museum starting March 29, 2008 and through most of 2008 (until November). Details at our post here.

For younger kids, this DK Essential Guide to CARS is also packed full of photos & info.

Mattel Disney Pixar Cars Checklist: How to Display Your CARS

If you’re collecting the Mattel Disney Pixar CARS and frankly, who isn’t … you might find you are running out of room … I’m eyeing this place as just about the right size for the collection as it’ll stand after 2008 …

Or something less fancy and more functional …

Or if you believe you can actually fit it all in your house now, reader Noel has a very classy solution, Ikea’s Detolf glass case with optional lighting kit – very nice and very classy – at a very nice affordable price.

Or a simple but functional bookcase from Ikea.

If money is no object, how cool would this look in your study? A custom-made old-style gas pump with the Dinoco logo? (Yes, this is the Sinclair Gas logo but you get the idea).

And while they might be now too small just to buy one now – how about this amazingly cool lighted CUSTOM display case for your CARS? (eBay link).

Another place that sells customized displays if you have the money to spend … Or here.

Not quite as customized for CARS but still cool looking … you might need to check with them if the CARS 1:55 fits onto their current cases …

Racing Products:

This might be the first plastic case specifically for CARS.

I haven’t actually seen or touched one in person but I’m sure others will jump on the bandwagon soon.

If you prefer them in plastic cases – Carney is one of the largest places selling diecast display cases. There’s also Great Display Cases, Display It!, ClearWater, Aculine, , Cases for Collectibles or if you want a spinning thing (wouldn’t the CARS fly around?) – check out also at Carney.

Though again the CARS 1:55 are an unusual size, so be sure and check FIRST!

The companies above that sell the plastic display cases should also sell the enclosures if you prefer to store the CARS unopened and sealed.

Or there’s this from Wal*Mart – it’s cool but small (only about 2 feet tall) – you can either use it to toss in all your CARS and playsets if you don’t mind some paint loss and dings 🙂 or perhaps you can get like 10 of them to store all your unopened singles …

NOTE – I have NOT ordered from most of the companies listed above (well other than Ikea) so I am not necessarily recommending them … just offering you some links. Good luck!

(yes, this post was originally part of the HOW TO COLLECT post but I could never remember when people asked me about display cases 😉 )

iPhone Caller ID: Glitch Fix

This might not apply to everyone but if you added additional information to the phone number in ADDRESS BOOK and after transferring/syncing – the iPhone cannot interpret the additional text and the iPhone CALLER ID feature won’t work correctly.

As a result, it will only display the incoming numbers only when the person is in your phone book – so you stare at it thinking, this phone number looks vaguely familiar but you can’t quite place it … (some people just hate when you don’t immediately recognize or hestitantly answer the phone … your wife, for example 🙂 )

As in this case, because I added ASPEN after her number, when Leslie calls, only her number will display – the iPhone attempts to match the incoming caller ID info with your address book but since ASPEN is not part of the incoming caller ID information – the iPhone blanches as a call NOT from someone in your phone book – so no caller ID info.

This also applies to people with landline phone extension numbers you might’ve added to their regular phone.

The solution is there but not necessarily apparent.

In ADDRESS BOOK, “custom” is smart (as is a lot of Apple apps), it’s ONLY custom to this person so in this case, I enter in ASPEN H but you can essentially enter any info you want – you get about 10 letters before it gets truncated.

(then of course, sync …)
